3What happens, and why
HEIC is the iPhone’s default photo format. Half the size of JPG at the same quality, but Windows and many websites cannot open it. iPhone and iPad cameras have saved in it by default since iOS 11. PNG is a lossless format. Every pixel is kept exactly and it stores transparency. Photographs come out far larger than JPG.
Converted to PNG, the photo opens as is on Windows, on older Macs, and in most websites and office programs. Quality already lost in HEIC does not come back as PNG. What you gain is that repeated saves from here on lose nothing more, and that editing tools which require PNG accept the file.
The file is opened and converted inside this browser and never sent to a server. PNG is a lossless format, so not one pixel changes. Camera metadata (EXIF) is not carried over, so no location data remains in the result. You can add several files at once.
