ICO is the format for Windows icons and website favicons. It holds several small sizes, such as 16, 32, 48 and 256 px, in one file. It is needed only for making a favicon. Nobody keeps photographs in it. BMP is the uncompressed Windows bitmap. The pixels are stored as they are, so files are large, and there is no transparency.
BMP is large because it is uncompressed, but Paint and older devices and programs open it without fail.
The file is opened and converted inside this browser and never sent to a server. BMP is a lossless format, so not one pixel changes. Camera metadata (EXIF) is not carried over, so no location data remains in the result. You can add several files at once.

What happens to a transparent background
BMP cannot store transparency. Transparent areas are filled with white. If you need a transparent background, choose PNG or WebP.
