JPG is the lossy compression format for photographs. It opens everywhere and cannot store a transparent background. Cameras, Android phones and most websites save in it. PNG is a lossless format. Every pixel is kept exactly and it stores transparency. Photographs come out far larger than JPG.
Quality already lost in JPG does not come back as PNG. What you gain is that repeated saves from here on lose nothing more, and that editing tools which require PNG accept the file.
The file is opened and converted inside this browser and never sent to a server. PNG is a lossless format, so not one pixel changes. Camera metadata (EXIF) is not carried over, so no location data remains in the result. You can add several files at once.
